5 Lesser Known Dr. Seuss Books
You’re familiar with Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham, but what about Horton Hatches the Egg or On Beyond Zebra? In celebration of National Reading Month and Dr. Seuss’ birthday, we’re sharing five of Dr. Seuss’ lesser known books that you can enjoy with your child.
1. And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street
Dr. Seuss’ first children’s book is about a boy named Marco with a wild imagination. Marco tells his father an outrageous story about the animals and vehicles he sees while walking down Mulberry Street. A blue elephant pulling a brass band and a zebra pulling a cart are just some of the crazy sights Marco dreams up.
2. The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins
In this Dr. Seuss book, Bartholomew removes his hat for King Derwin only to discover that another hat magically appears… and another, and another! Your child will love turning the pages to reveal more and more of this zany story.
3. Horton Hatches the Egg
You’re probably familiar with Horton from Horton Hears a Who. In this book, Horton promises a mother bird that he’ll sit on her nest and babysit her egg. Despite hardships, Horton refuses to leave the egg, which eventually hatches into a baby “Elephant Bird.” This heartwarming tale teaches the importance of loyalty and responsibility.
4. On Beyond Zebra!
What’s after Z is for Zebra? This hilarious book will introduce your child to 20 new letters of the alphabet, including GLIKK and SPAZZ, and the crazy creatures that accompany them. After reading, encourage your child to create his own unique letters.
5. Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?
This book presents whimsical characters who live unlucky lives, including the residents of Ga-Zayt who get stuck in traffic jams, the Poogle-Horn players who break their horns every morning, and Harry Haddow who is unable to cast a shadow. Dr. Seuss’ rhymes and illustrations will help your child realize just how lucky he is.
