From the Front Office
Hello families, February is here and with it brings many exciting events and activities. Open House was a great success and we have new families joining us: welcome everyone. We also have new teachers joining us as our school has grown. Please help welcome Ms. Kelly, Ms. Payton, Ms. Kerry, and Ms. Dafne. We are happy to have such caring teachers join our staff.
Each month we have certain spirit days, let’s make sure this month we strive to make these days fun by everyone participating. Let’s show how awesome Discovery Isle is!
Please note that picture day is coming! We have scheduled two days so everyone can have their picture taken! Further information will be sent home as the time draws near.
We also have Officer Alan coming on the 13th to fingerprint your child. These are the fingerprints the police use to protect our children.
Lastly, Valentines Day may mean candy to some, but it also conveys love and caring. Spend time with your children making cards and/or crafts, bake valentine treats, and give them to other special people. Check out the back of this newsletter for a fun heart wreath craft to do together.
Some of the classrooms are having parties so be sure to check with your teacher what you can do to make it special.
Thank you all for being part of our Discovery Isle family.
Peace and happiness,
Christy and Tina

Tina’s Reading Corner
This month’s author is Maurice Sendak. As you read aloud together, ask your child to discuss their viewpoint of the story and ask them how they arrived at their answers. Developing metacognition-the ability to discuss one’s thinking process- is an important critical thinking skill
needed for successful reading experiences. Here are some of his amazing books.

We will be closed on the 20th for Presidents’ Day. Happy Birthday George and Abe!
Tissue Paper Heart Wreath
Here is a fun Valentine’s craft to make together.
You Will Need:
Heart shaped wreath form – cut from recycled cereal box or chipboard
Lots and LOTS of red and pink tissue paper squares
White glue
Paint brush
Pencil with eraser
Ribbon or string for hanging
Embellishments – pom poms, sequins, etc. (optional)
Use the paintbrush to spread a small amount of white glue on to a section of the wreath (work on about 1/6 of the wreath at a time). Place the eraser side of the pencil into the center of a tissue paper square, and use the eraser to help place your squares on to the wreath form. Continue to work section by section until the entire wreath form is full and covered.
Depending on the patience level of your children, you may have to take a break or two and come back to your project later. This heart wreath took about a full 40 minutes to cover, so making a smaller heart is another option. Don’t’ forget to add embellishments!
